PREFABS IN UT3

HI GUYS, THERE IS NO WAY TO DUPLICATE OBJECTS AND MAINTAIN THEIR LINKS TO KISMET ... UNLESS ... YOU CREATE A PREFAB FIRST.

THIS ADVICE IS FROM ARCADIA VINCENNES (http://www.avld.org/pages/link/mappers.htm)

"To create a prefab, set up the system - in your case the interpactor and the associated kismet for one instance. Then right click on the interpactor, and select 'create prefab'. The editor will ask you where you want to save the prefab. If you're already working with your own packages, just stick it in there, otherwise, I'd recommend saving it in the map itself, so the package name would be the map's name, and for a group name I'd recommend 'prefabs' and then name the actual prefab whatever you want. Once that's done, you'll see your named prefab in the generic browser. Select it, right-click in the world, and select 'place prefab_xxx here' and poof. there it is. Now you can place that system anywhere you like, as much as you like."

"And yes - you can duplicate prefabs all over the place. The part where it can become annoying is that prefabs also save the orientation of the original version. So every time you duplicate a prefab, the new prefab will 'snap' back to its original orientation. Still, re-orienting prefabs after duplication is a small price to pay for not having to hook up everything in Kismet each time - especially for complex systems. Another thing to be careful with prefabs is that if you dupe a whole bunch, and then make individual changes, they will be reset if you ever update the original prefab. Just something to keep in the back of the head."

STATIC MESH LIGHTING BREAKTHROUGH

HI GUYS, IT SEEMS HAVING A SECOND SET OF UV's FOR A LIGHTMAP CHANNEL IS CRITICAL. GIVEN THIS IS THE WAY EPIC SETS UP THEIR STATIC MESH'S THIS PROBABLY SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN A SURPRISE. HOW TO DO THAT? IT'S ACTUALLY NOT THAT HARD ... ONCE YOU KNOW.

THE BREAKTHROUGH FOR ME WAS AT THE END OF SECTION 3 WHERE HE TELLS YOU HOW TO SEPARATE OUT THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE MESH ... I.E. IN THE UV EDITOR YOU ARE FACED WITH A MESS OF OVERLAPPING POLYGONS AND IT SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE TO SELECT THEM TO REARRANGE THEM LIKE HOURENCE SAYS YOU HAVE TO; BUT WAYLON POINTS OUT THAT YOU CAN SELECT THE POLYS IN THE PERSPECTIVE VIEW AND THEY ARE SELECTED AT THE SAME TIME IN THE UV EDITOR, MAKING FIGURING OUT WHAT REPRESENTS WHAT VERY EASY.

DOING SQUARE THINGS IS EASIEST, AS YOU WOULD IMAGINE, BUT WITH SOFT SELECTION CURVY THINGS WOULD FOLLOW THE SAME METHOD.

PLACING A RIGID BODY IN A LEVEL

HI GUYS, IN THE "HOW DO I ... ?" SERIES FOR UT3 ON THE 3DBUZZ WEBSITE THERE IS A "HOW DO I" CALLED "PLACING A RIGID BODY IN A LEVEL.

ALONG WITH THE MAIN TASK IT TALKS ABOUT DYNAMIC SHADOWS AND A PARTICULAR SETTINGS WITHIN THE DYNAMIC (RIGID BODY) OBJECT ITSELF. THE SHADOWS SEEM TO UPDATE IN REAL TIME, WHICH REMINDED ME OF A PROBLEM SOME OF YOU MAY HAVE BEEN HAVING.

PRO-BOOLEAN SOLUTION

HI GUYS, I WAS WORKING ON A MESH IN 3DSMAX THAT STARTED OUT LIFE AS AN *STL FILE. WHEN I USED PRO-BOOLEAN A LARGE PART OF THE MESH DISAPPEARED, WHICH WAS SIMILAR TO WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN CLASS.

THE REASON ONLY A PART OF THE MESH DISAPPEARED WAS THAT IT WAS A SEPARATE 'ELEMENT' AND IT WASN'T CLOSED (IT WAS A CHARACTER MODEL AND HAD SOME OPENINGS AROUND THE MOUTH). IT ALSO HAD A FIT WHEN SOME VERTEXES WEREN'T WELDED.

AFTER I SORTED THOSE ISSUES THE PRO-BOOLEAN WORKED LIKE A CHARM.

TO FIND OUT IF THIS MIGHT BE YOUR PROBLEM USE THE "STL CHECK" MODIFIER ON YOUR MESH; THERE IS A "CHECK" BOX AT THE BOTTOM OF ITS PARAMETERS AND IT'LL SHOW THE ERRORS IN RED LINES IN THE WIREFRAME.

IF ANY SHOW UP YOU CAN LEAVE THE STL CHECK AT THE TOP OF THE STACK AND THEN GO IN AND FIX UP THE PROBLEM (USUALLY BY WELDING VERTEXES OR CREATING NEW POLYS, OR REMOVING ERRANT ONES) AND THEN WHEN YOU CLICK ON THE STL CHECK AT THE TOP OF THE STACK IT WILL RE-RUN THE TEST. SO IT'S REASONABLY QUICK.

VISIBILITY IN 3DS MAX

HI GUYS, I MENTIONED I WOULD GET BACK TO A FEW OF YOU ON THIS.

1. SEARCH "VISIBILITY" IN THE HELP MENU.
2. CHOOSE "ADD VISIBILITY TRACK".
3. YOU REMOVE THE VISIBILITY TRACK IN THE SAME MENU THAT YOU ADD IT (JUST IN CASE YOU WANT TO GET RID OF IT AND START AGAIN).
4. TO GET AN OBJECT TO DISAPPEAR INSTANTLY USE THE BUTTON "SET TANGENTS TO STEP" (13TH BUTTON FROM THE TOP LEFT).
5. TO GET AN OBJECT TO GRADUALLY FADE OUT USE ANY OF THE OTHER TANGENT BUTTONS ("SET TANGENTS TO LINEAR" WILL CREATE A CONSTANT FADE).
6. IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT FADES ONLY WORK BETWEEN THE VALUES OF 1 AND 0.
7. THERE ARE TWO SMALL FIELDS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TRACK VIEW WINDOW THAT SHOW WHAT FRAME AND VALUE THE SELECTED KEY HAS. YOU CAN USE THESE WINDOWS TO ADJUST THE VALUES DIRECTLY (I.E. MAKE SURE YOUR CERTAIN KEYS ARE EXACTLY ZERO, ETC).

WINNER

IT WAS AN INCREDIBLY CLOSE CALL, WITH THREE OF YOU ON EVEN VOTES FOR THE WIN, BUT WHEN THE RUNNER UP VOTES WERE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT TO BREAK THE DEADLOCK WE FIND THE WINNER OF OUR FIRST ARCH7202 EXAM IS .... KIMBERLEY.

WELL DONE KIMBERLEY, THIS IS WHAT WAS SAID...

"Kimberley's is the most conceptual and powerful, I look forward to her explanation, but it seems more like a monument to (overcoming) depression than a place designed to treat it. Do you start underground and elevate yourself as you become less melancholic? Nevertheless, as an image it is fantastic."

"Kimberley's model was mysterious without trying to be so. It kinda reminded me of Gaudi's towers, which would work for a landmark location such as we have. Kimberley also got my award for "quickly and efficiently setting the scene" with surrounding mass and the stack itself; I feel like a student from another studio could have immediately gotten what the model was for, if not what it's about. I'm curious about the buildings extending below ground, and want to find out why."

"I think (Kimberleys) is worthy of a mention for its uniqueness. I also appreciate the free flowing modeling in contrast to the majority of the classes quite structured schemes, and while the structured schemes have the advantage of seeming closer to a feasible architectural solution, I am probably most interested in seeing how this one develops."

"The scheme proposed is not an arbitrary use of the site but rather considers both the underneath and the site itself in a new and fresh manner. It is refreshing to see a sculptural rather than blokish approach to the site and one that neither attempts to hide or mimic the stack but rather instead subverts its power by imposing a more beautiful and potentially responsible approach in front of it. Now one looks at and is inspired by the spires rather than confused by the block of the current stack."

"Kimberly's model is simple and elegant. Even though there is a large contrast between existing and proposed, there is a sense that it "fits". Some of the other models seem to take upon the approach to "fit" the site by filling it to its extents and in turn curtain/hide the stack. Even though there is no inclusion of text, there is clarity in the pool + tunnel gas extraction playing roles in the sculptural forms. Its relationship to the brief in terms of addressing a "hospital" is ambiguous which offers a multitude of readings and questions to arise. I want to know, what it does, how does it work, can people occupy the spaces inside these spires? As a building proposal it sheds all consciousness of being realistic, but as an architectural proposal it is engaging and opens up questions about possibility."

ON FRUSZI'S:

"I think this project shows a clear circulation through the building and builds on the previous work explored in Session 1. The entry to the site is well designed and empathetic to the surrounding context. The form is interesting and complex and has a lot of potential both structurally and theoretically."

"While other student's models showed cohesive ideas unto themselves, were interesting or explored cool Solidworks aesthetics, Fruzi's relatively simple model seemed to fit very well with her project. I didn't have to call up her blog to remind me what I should be looking for in her model. The varied repetition and elongation of elements just said sleepless, restless. The form also fits the site, on a variety of levels."

ON NOA'S:

"My vote goes to Noa's, although it is most at risk of becoming a bit kitsch, I think. There is a clear journey through it (partly because of his last assignment). The connections between these really discrete buildings and the buildings and the stack will be very important and tricky. The concept and the architecture are both there. and it looks like a guy in a sleeping bag with his feet in an igloo."

"Two primary reasons for this selection: Firstly, the hearth is an instantly recognisable feature with an interesting form that doesn’t resort to clichés. The general concept of the hub is also apparent through the schemes interaction with both street fronts. This dialogue with the site is the second and greatest strength. The understated entry from the laneway in combination with the feature openings to South Dowling set the tone for the variety of uses to be housed in the project. The three distinct components reiterate the various programmes whilst also establishing a strong relationship with the site topography and the existing ventilation stack."

AfH - DESIGNING FOR HOSPITAL AT HOME18 September 2008

The purpose of the presentation/debate is to look at design issues raised by the expectation that increasingly, healthcare should be delivered where practicable within the home environment.

Four speakers/presentations will discuss the promotion/integration of, policies for and design requirements associated with the integration of hospital/care functions within home environments.

“Although the acute hospital is the standard venue for treatment of acute illness, it is not always an ideal care environment, especially for older persons.

"The acute hospital can be a hazardous place for... persons to receive care. Latrogenic illness, delirium, functional decline, and other adverse events occur frequently and can precipitate a 'cascade to dependency.' Also, there is increasing evidence that the culture of care in the acute hospital is often at odds with the wishes of patients.

"Hospital At Home care can substitute for an acute hospital stay and a patient may avoid these problems while receiving high quality hospital-level care in their home."

THIS COULD BE AN INTERESTING TWIST ON THE BRIEF FOR A HOSPITAL.

NIGHT TIME VIDEO CLIP

HI GUYS, I'VE PUT A VIDEO CLIP OF THE SITE (AND THE CORNER OF SOUTH DOWLING ST AND FLINDERS STREET) SHOT AT NIGHT IN THE COURSE FOLDER ON THE RESOURCES DRIVE.



IT'S A BIT "NOISEY" BUT FEEL FREE TO USE AS YOU LIKE. I'LL PROBABLY PUT A FEW MORE THERE IN THE COMMING WEEKS.

UT3 ADVICE

HI ALL, AFTER A LITTLE BIT OF EXPERIMENTATION THIS AFTERNOON I CAN OFFER A FEW WORDS OF ADVICE RE UT3:

1. THE TUTORIALS AT http://waylon-art.com/LearningUnreal/ ARE VERY GOOD. I CAN BACK UP HIS ADVICE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE FIRST LEVEL TUTORIAL THAT THE SUBTRACTIVE MODE CAN LEAD TO SOME "WEIRD BUGS". ADDITIVE WAS MUCH BETTER.

2. THE MOST RECENT PATCH I COULD FIND IS HERE: http://www.gamershell.com/download_23348.shtml WHICH SEEMED TO HELP A BIT.

3. QUIT THE UNREAL EDITOR IF YOU WISH TO OPEN YOUR MAP IN UT3.

4. RUNNING UT3 IN A WINDOW STOPPED THE STRANGE RIPPLING EFFECT OVER THE TEXTURES; WHICH DIDN'T HAPPEN EVEN AT A HIGHER RESOLUTION WHEN IT WAS IN A WINDOW. YOU CAN ALSO MAXIMISE THE WINDOW SO IT TAKES UP THE FULL SCREEN...(LOOK IN THE VIDEO SETTINGS IN THE USER INTERFACE)

EDIT: I'VE JUST FOUND IF I FOLLOWED THE ADVICE FOR "PREPARING YOUR MAP FOR PUBLISHING AND DISTRIBUTION" HERE:
http://forums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=590932 MY GRAPHICS PROBLEM WENT AWAY. THIS HAPPENED BEFORE THE SCREEN SHOT PART OF THE TUTORIAL SO IT WAS SOMETHING IN THE FIRST FEW STEPS. I'LL DO ANOTHER COUPLE OF TESTS TO CONFIRM.

EDIT 2: IT LOOKS LIKE MY SCREEN PROBLEM HAS GONE AWAY FOR GOOD, I'VE JUST TRIED MAKING A FRESH MAP TO CAUSE THE PROBLEM AND THEN FIX IT, BUT UNFORTUNATELY I CAN'T GET THE PROBLEM TO REAPPEAR IN THE FIRST PLACE. I'VE GONE BACK THOUGH ALL OF THE FIRST TESTS I HAD DONE AND THE PROBLEM DOESN'T REAPPEAR. VERY STRANGE. I'M INTERESTED TO HEAR IF ANYONE ELSE HAS THIS PROBLEM.

5. WHEN I SHIFTED AN EDGE (USING GEOMETRY EDITING) SO THAT IT SNAPPED TO ANOTHER EDGE, I WAS MAKING AN RAMP, THE SIDES OF THAT GEOMETRY DISAPPEARED. A WORK AROUND IS TO REDUCE THE GRID FOR SNAPPING AND PLACE THE EDGES CLOSE BUT NOT OVERLAPPING. A BETTER WORK AROUND IS TO BUILD YOUR GEOMETRY IN 3DSMAX.

6. A FORUM SO WE CAN CREATE A DATABASE OF ADVICE AND QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT IDEA TO ME. THERE ARE PLENTY OF UT3 FORUMS OUT THERE ALREADY BUT HAVING SOMETHING SPECIFIC MIGHT SAVE US ALL TIME IN THE LONG RUN.

I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED WITH THE MACHINIMA 'MASHUPS' THAT WE SAW ON FRIDAY. THERE WAS CLEAR EVIDENCE OF THINKING, SOME GREAT STYLE, AND AN EXCELLENT DISCUSSION/CRITIQUE OF THE WORK.

I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THE PRELIMINARY DRAFTS FOR EXP2 NEXT TUESDAY, BUT UNTIL THEN MAKE SURE YOU UPLOAD YOUR FINAL VIDEOS TO YOUTUBE AND LINK BACK TO YOUR BLOGS.

HI ALL,

GREAT TO LOOK THROUGH YOUR BLOGS AND SEE AN INTERESTING VARIETY OF CLIPS. I HAVEN'T HAD A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW BUT I'VE LEFT COMMENTS ON A FEW. I REALLY RECOMMEND YOU ALL KEEP AN EYE ON WHAT EACH OF YOU ARE DOING/FINDING, THIS IS WHERE THE BLOGS CAN MAKE A GREAT CONTRIBUTION.

ONE THING I'D LIKE TO ADD IS THAT THE REAL SKILL, AND DESIGN, IN THIS EXPERIMENT IS IN MAKING THE CLIPS YOUR OWN. THAT IS, SHIFTING THEM FROM WHAT THEY WERE TRYING TO SAY SO THAT THEY COMBINE TO REINFORCE AND ELABORATE ON WHAT IT IS THAT YOU ARE TRY TO SAY.
